我立刻出声制止,“医生说了,豆itssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssstelenovela-style TV drama on at full blast.
The coffee table was littered with a pile of sunflower seed shells she hadnt bothered to clean up.
Shed come to enjoy her golden years at Zhou Chengs insistence two years after we got married.
The idea was for her to help with the baby, but in reality, aside from stuffing Doudou with all sorts of unhealthy snacks, all she did was find fault with me.
Youre back? What did the doctor say about Doudou? she asked without even looking up.
Zhou Cheng, while changing his shoes, mumbled a reply, Nothing much. Doctor said shes just lacking nutrition, needs to eat more.
He was lying.
I watched him with cold eyes, not exposing him.
My mother-in-law oh-ed, finally deigning to tear her eyes away from the TV and fix them on me.
Ive been saying it all along. Kids arent that delicate. Back in our day, we ate bran and wild vegetables and grew up just fine. Its you, feeding her all that fancy stuff with no grease. How could she possibly grow tall!
As she spoke, she picked up a preserved plum and tried to hand it to Doudou, who had just walked in.
Doudou, come, Grandma has something yummy for you.
Mom! I immediately cut her off. The doctor said Doudou cant eat these high-salt, high-sugar snacks. It affects her growth.
My mother-in-laws hand froze. Her face fell.
Whats wrong with this? Its just a plum. Look how skinny she is, its pitiful. Its all because of you, being so stingy with food.
Its not about being stingy, its about being healthy, I said, my patience wearing thin. If you really care about her, please stop giving her junk food.
What are you implying? That Id harm my own granddaughter? Her voice shot up, sharp and piercing. I raised your husband just fine, didnt I? Hes tall and strong! Its you, with all your book-smart nonsense, making a big deal out of nothing!
Zhou Cheng, who had been trying to be invisible, finally spoke up.
Alright, alright, Mom, Ranran, stop arguing. Ranran is just worried about the kid. He turned to me. Moms just showing she cares. Dont be so sensitive.
He was playing the peacemaker again.
But his words, Dont be so sensitive, were like pouring salt on my wound.
I was the one humiliated at the hospital, and now Im the sensitive one?
That night, I barely slept.
The man lying next to me, his steady breathing, now sounded like a bellows, fanning the flames of my anger.
I kept replaying the scene in the doctors office.
The doctors calm, professional demeanor.
Zhou Chengs instant paling and subsequent avoidance.
His desperate attempt to cover it up in front of his mother.
His fear of losing face.
Everything connected into a giant, suffocating net of suspicion.
The next morning, I got up early.
I didnt make breakfast. I sat at the dining table, waiting for Zhou Cheng.
He came out of the bedroom, yawning. Seeing me sitting there with a stony face, he hesitated.
Youre up early. Are you still mad?
Ive made an appointment, I said, my voice flat.
What appointment?
The paternity testing center. Tomorrow morning at nine.
He froze, the toothbrush in his mouth nearly dropping.
Lin Ran, are you serious? I said I believe you!
I dont believe you, I said calmly. And more importantly, I need an explanation for myself. I will not live with this kind of suspicion.
What suspicion? Its all in your head! he said, his voice rising in frustration. Youre just making trouble out of nothing!
Am I? I looked straight into his eyes. Zhou Cheng, let me ask you again. Why did you look so terrified when the doctor said that? It wasnt just shock. It was fear. What are you afraid of?
His face changed colors, from red to white.
I... I was afraid youd misunderstand! Afraid youd get angry! Is that not a good enough reason?
A very smooth excuse.
But it didnt convince me.
Fine, I said, taking a deep breath. Lets put your reason aside. This test is happening. Im taking Doudou tomorrow. You can come or not.
Im not going! Its utterly humiliating! he roared.
Okay, I nodded. But the fee for the test, yuan, youre paying for it. Consider it compensation for the emotional damage Ive suffered.
Youre insane! Youre trying to blackmail me!
If you think proving my innocence is blackmail, then so be it, I retorted, standing up. The money, or you come with me and explain to the staff why your wife insists on a paternity test. You choose.
He stared at me, his chest heaving.
For the first time in our seven years of marriage, I saw not just anger in his eyes, but a flicker of real panic.
He knew I wasnt bluffing.
That afternoon, while Zhou Cheng was at work, my mother-in-law received a phone call.
I was in the living room with Doudou, teaching her to draw. My mother-in-law took the phone to the balcony, her voice low and secretive.
But our apartment wasnt that big. I could still catch snippets.
...what? Your sister-in-laws son is getting married? ... Needs how much? Twenty thousand? ... Oh, Chengs been tight on money lately... Ill ask him... Dont worry, he always listens to me...
My hand holding the crayon paused.
Another relative wanting money.
Since my mother-in-law moved in, our home had become her familys personal ATM.
Her brothers son needed a down payment for a house, her sisters daughter was going to college... all sorts of reasons to borrow money. Money that was never returned.
Zhou Cheng, driven by his pathetic filial piety and need to look successful, always gave in.
Hed give the money, then complain to me about how tight our budget was.
I had fought with him about this countless times. He would always say, Theyre my family. I cant just watch them suffer.
But he never considered that we were suffering too.
That night, Zhou Cheng came home looking exhausted.
He avoided my eyes, silently ate his dinner, and then tried to slip into the study.
Stop, I called out.
He flinched.
My mom called today, he said preemptively. My cousin is getting married, and theyre a bit short...
How much? I asked directly.
Twenty thousand... he mumbled.
We dont have it.
Ranran, its just twenty thousand. We can manage...
No, we cant, I said, my voice cold. Our savings are for Doudous education and for emergencies. Your cousins wedding is not our emergency.
Its family! Its about face! he argued, his voice getting louder. If I dont help, how can I face them in the future?
Face, face, face! Your whole life is about face! I finally exploded. Your wife is being insulted, you dont care about face! Your daughters health might be at risk, you dont care about face! But your cousin, who you see once every three years, needs money for a wedding, and suddenly its all about face?
Thats different!
How is it different? In your heart, is your mothers family more important than your wife and daughter?
The question hung in the air, sharp and deadly.
He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
His silence was the loudest answer.
I see, I said, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. I get it now.
I turned and went into the bedroom, pulling out my laptop.
I logged into our joint bank account.
The balance was much lower than I expected.
I started checking the transaction history.
One transfer after another, all to an account I didnt recognize.
Five thousand here, eight thousand there. All within the last year.
The total was over fifty thousand.
The recipients name was Zhou Li. His sister.
My blood ran cold.
He had been secretly transferring money to his family behind my back.
While telling me we needed to be frugal. While complaining about the cost of Doudous extracurricular classes.
I felt like the biggest fool in the world.
I printed out the bank statement.
When Zhou Cheng finally came into the bedroom, looking like a defeated dog, I threw the papers at him.
They scattered on the floor like dead leaves.
Explain this, I said, my voice shaking with rage.
He looked at the papers, and his face, which was already pale, turned ghostly white.
I... I can explain...
Go on. Im listening.
My dad... hes not been well... needed money for treatment... he stammered.
Your dads treatment? I laughed, a harsh, ugly sound. Last month your mom said he won a prize in the villages senior chess tournament. He looked healthier than anyone. Zhou Cheng, can you tell me one single truth?
He collapsed onto the edge of the bed, burying his face in his hands.
Im sorry, he whispered. I just... I didnt want you to worry. My family has a lot of difficulties...
So you chose to lie to me? To steal from our shared savings? The money for our daughters future?
The word steal made him flinch.
Its not stealing! Thats my money too!
Is it? I challenged. I quit my job to raise our child. These past few years, this family has been running on my past savings and your salary. You think youve been the sole provider? You think you have the right to squander our resources on your bottomless pit of a family?
The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder.
The paternity test, I said, my voice suddenly calm, chillingly so. Tomorrow morning. You will go. You will pay. And this twenty thousand for your cousin? Not a single cent.
He looked up, his eyes red. Ranran, you cant be so heartless.
Heartless? I felt a surge of hysterical laughter building in my chest. Compared to a man who suspects his wife and deceives his family, I think Im a saint.
That night, for the first time, I kicked him out of the bedroom.
He could sleep on the sofa with his precious face.
The next morning, Zhou Cheng looked like he hadnt slept at all. His eyes were bloodshot.
He drove us to the judicial appraisal center in complete silence.
The place had a solemn, sterile atmosphere, even more so than the hospital.
The process was simple and humiliating.
Taking photos, pressing fingerprints, collecting oral swabs.
Doudou was scared. She clutched my hand, her little body trembling. Mommy, what are they doing? Does it hurt?
I knelt down, my heart aching. Its okay, baby. Its just a game. Theyre checking to see if youre as brave as Ultraman.
I smiled at her, but I wanted to cry.
Why did my innocent child have to go through this?
Zhou Cheng stood aside, his head bowed, looking like a criminal awaiting sentencing.
When it was his turn, the staff member, a brisk young woman, asked, Relationship to the child?
He mumbled, Father.
The word sounded so ironic, so flimsy.
I paid the yuan fee with his card. As I entered the password, my fingers were steady.
This wasnt just a test fee. It was the price of his doubt. The first installment of the debt he owed me and my daughter.
The results would take a week.
That week was the longest week of my life.
The house felt like a pressure cooker.
My mother-in-law, sensing the tension, became unusually quiet. But her prying eyes followed me everywhere, full of suspicion.
She probably got the story from Zhou Cheng, a twisted version where I was the unreasonable, hysterical wife.
Zhou Cheng and I barely spoke.
We were like two strangers sharing a roof, our conversations limited to Is dinner ready? and Im going to bed.
I spent my days researching.
I looked up everything about childrens growth, from nutrition to endocrinology.
I also searched for the name of the doctor, Wang Li.
She was the head of pediatric endocrinology, a renowned expert in the field. Her online reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Patients described her as sharp, direct, but extremely responsible.
One review caught my eye.
Dr. Wang is a miracle worker. My son was short for years, local doctors just said he was a late bloomer. Dr. Wang saw him once and suspected a rare genetic syndrome. A test confirmed it. She doesnt waste time with comforting words, she finds the problem.
A chill went down my spine.
A rare genetic syndrome.
She finds the problem.
Could it be?
Could the doctors suggestion not be an insult, but a diagnostic shortcut? A blunt, but necessary, step to rule out a variable?
My brain, the logical, analytical designers brain that had been clouded by anger, started to work again.
What if the problem wasnt my fidelity, but something hidden in our genes?
I started looking at Zhou Cheng differently.
He was tall, yes. But his family?
I remembered the one and only time I went to his village for our wedding.
His father, his uncles, his male cousins... none of them were particularly tall. Most were around my height, or even shorter.
At the time, my mother-in-law had explained it away with a wave of her hand. We were poor back then. Never had enough to eat. Of course they couldnt grow tall.
I had accepted that explanation.
But what if it wasnt malnutrition?
What if it was genetic?
A week later, the report was ready.
I went to get it alone.
I sat in my car in the parking lot, my hands shaking as I tore open the envelope.
I skipped all the technical jargon and went straight to the conclusion.
Based on the analysis of the DNA results, Zhou Cheng is the biological father of Zhou Yutong (Doudou).
I let out a long, shaky breath.
I should have been relieved. I should have felt vindicated.
But I didnt.
All I felt was a profound emptiness.
This piece of paper proved my innocence, but it couldnt fix the cracks in my marriage. It couldnt erase the suspicion, the lies, the hurt.
I drove home, the report lying on the passenger seat like a trophy I never wanted.
When I walked in, Zhou Cheng and his mother were both in the living room. It was clear they were waiting for me.
Zhou Cheng jumped up as soon as he saw me. The results?
I tossed the envelope onto the coffee table.
He snatched it up, his hands trembling even more than mine had. He read it, his face a mixture of relief and deep, deep shame.
See! I told you! I told you it was nothing! he exclaimed, trying to force a smile.
My mother-in-law craned her neck to look, her lips moving as she slowly read the words.
Then, she did something I never expected.
She slapped her own thigh and burst into tears.
My poor son! My poor son! What sin have you committed to marry such a woman! Shes trying to torment you to death! Making you do this shameful thing! My ancestors faces are all lost because of her!
I was stunned into silence.
The logic was astounding.
I was the one who was suspected, humiliated, and forced to prove my innocence.
And now, I was the perpetrator? I was the one tormenting him?
I looked at Zhou Cheng, waiting for him to say something. To defend me. To tell his mother the truth.
He just stood there, flustered. Mom, dont cry, dont cry. Its over now. Its fine.
He didnt say, Mom, youre wrong. It wasnt Ranrans fault.
He didnt say, Mom, the doctor started this, and I failed to protect my wife.
He just said, Its over now.
I started to laugh.
It was a quiet laugh at first, then it grew louder and louder, until tears were streaming down my face.
Youre right, I said, wiping my tears, my voice eerily calm. Its not over. Its just beginning.
Zhou Cheng and his mother looked at me, startled by my reaction.
Lin Ran, what do you mean?
I ignored him and walked into the bedroom, locking the door behind me.
I took out my phone and booked another appointment with Dr. Wang.
This time, I was going alone with Doudou.
And I was bringing the paternity test report.
And a list of questions.
The first major reversal had happened. The test proved I was innocent.
But the real mystery was just beginning. The doctors words, his familys history, the lies... it was all a tangled mess.
I knew, with chilling certainty, that Doudous height was just the tip of the iceberg.
The real problem was buried much, much deeper.
The next day, I took a half-day off.
I told Zhou Cheng I was taking Doudou to the park. He didnt question it, probably thinking I needed to cool off.
The air in Dr. Wangs office was the same, but my state of mind was completely different.
I was no longer the angry, humiliated wife. I was a mother on a mission.
I sat down and placed the paternity test report on her desk.
Dr. Wang, the report is here. As you can see, the paternity is confirmed. My voice was steady.
Dr. Wang picked it up, glanced at the conclusion, and nodded. Her expression didnt change, no surprise, no apology.
Good, she said simply. That rules out one possibility.
So, I leaned forward, my eyes fixed on hers. What is the other possibility? The one that made you suggest this test in the first place?
Dr. Wang looked at me, a flicker of appreciation in her eyes. She had probably expected me to either yell at her or never show up again.
She turned her computer screen towards me. It showed a page from a medical database, full of complex terms.
Im a pediatric endocrinologist. My job is to look for patterns. When I see a child with significant growth retardation, but whose parents heights are normal, I have to consider several factors.
She pointed to the screen. One is, of course, a non-biological father, which provides incorrect genetic data for height prediction. Weve ruled that out.
The second, she continued, her tone serious, is a specific type of genetic condition. One of them is called Turner Syndrome, but that only affects girls and is related to the X chromosome. Another is something called SHOX gene haploinsufficiency.
I stared at the unfamiliar term. SHOX... what?
Its a gene that is critical for bone development, particularly in the arms and legs. A mutation or deletion in this gene can lead to disproportionate short stature. The childs torso might be of normal length, but their limbs are short.
My heart pounded. Doudou was exactly like that. Her little arms and legs were noticeably shorter than her peers.
This condition, Dr. Wang continued, can be inherited. And it has a characteristic that often gets overlooked in families. Its passed down in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning you only need one copy of the faulty gene from one parent to have the condition.
She looked at me pointedly. When I asked about the familys height history, the fathers reaction was... interesting. He was quick to blame it all on malnutrition. Thats a common excuse to mask a genetic pattern, especially in families that value face over facts.
Her words hit me like a ton of bricks.
It all made sense now.
Zhou Chengs panic. His familys uniform shortness. His mothers insistence that they were poor.
It wasnt a lie to cover up my infidelity. It was a lie to cover up his familys genetic secret.
So, you suspected this from the beginning? I asked, my voice hoarse.
I had a clinical suspicion, she corrected. The paternity test, while emotionally charged, is the fastest way to confirm the paternal genetic line. If the father is indeed the biological father, and he comes from a family with a history of short stature, then my next step is to recommend genetic testing for the SHOX gene, for both the child and the father.
I felt a wave of dizziness.
He knew.
Or at least, he suspected.
He knew his family had a problem, and he hid it from me.
He let me believe it was my fault, that my genes were not good enough.
He watched me get humiliated by a doctor, and his first instinct was not to protect me, but to protect his familys shameful secret.
The anger I felt before was nothing compared to the cold, hard fury that was now consuming me.
This wasnt just about lies. This was about the health of my child.
Whats the treatment? I asked, forcing myself to focus.
If its confirmed, the treatment is growth hormone therapy, Dr. Wang said. The earlier we start, the better the outcome. We can significantly improve the childs final adult height.
Growth hormone. I knew it was expensive.
The cost...
Its not cheap, she admitted. Depending on the dosage, it can be several thousand to over ten thousand yuan a month. And its a long-term commitment, possibly until the childs growth plates close in her late teens.
Ten thousand a month. For ten years or more.
That was over a million yuan.
A million yuan that Zhou Cheng had been happily giving away to his relatives, 5, or , at a time.
I thanked Dr. Wang, my mind a whirlwind of calculations and decisions.
I walked out of the hospital, the afternoon sun blindingly bright.
I didnt go home.
I took Doudou to a KFC. I bought her a large portion of fries and a sundae, things I usually strictly forbade.
Mommy, are we celebrating? she asked, her mouth full of ice cream.
Yes, baby, I said, stroking her hair. We are celebrating the start of a new life.
My new life. And hers.
That evening, I didnt wait for Zhou Cheng.
I cooked a simple dinner for myself and Doudou. I gave my mother-in-law her share, then went into the study and locked the door.
I turned on my old work computer. It had been dormant for years.
I opened my portfolio. The designs, the projects, the awards... they felt like they belonged to another person. A person who was confident, independent, and had a future.
I spent the next two hours updating my resume and sending it out to headhunters and old contacts.
My skills were rusty, but my foundation was solid. I was a damn good designer. I had just forgotten.
At around ten, Zhou Cheng knocked on the door.
Ranran, open the door. Lets talk.
I opened it.
He looked at my computer screen, at my resume, and his face changed. What are you doing?
What does it look like Im doing? I said calmly. Im looking for a job.
Why? Are you still angry? I told you Im sorry!
Im looking for a job because our daughter needs growth hormone therapy, which could cost over a million yuan. And since youve been so generous with our familys money, I figure I should probably start earning some myself.
I delivered the words one by one, like dropping stones into a frozen lake.
He stared at me, uncomprehending. What growth hormone? What are you talking about?
I went to see Dr. Wang again today, I said, crossing my arms. She explained everything. About the SHOX gene. About your familys malnutrition history.
Every word I said made his face lose a shade of color.
By the time I finished, he was leaning against the doorframe for support.
So you knew, I said, my voice devoid of emotion. You knew your family had a genetic problem, and you deliberately hid it from me when we got married.
I didnt know for sure! he cried, his voice breaking. It was just... a rumor in the family. They always said our side of the family was just built smaller. No one ever said it was a disease!
A disease you were afraid might be passed on to your child, I finished for him. A disease that made you panic when the doctor brought up genetics. A disease youd rather let me be humiliated for than admit its existence.
I was scared! he pleaded. I was scared youd look down on me, on my family!
Look down on you? I laughed. Zhou Cheng, I have never, ever looked down on you or your background. I looked down on your weakness. I looked down on your hypocrisy. And now, I look down on your cowardice and selfishness.
He flinched as if I had slapped him.
The doctor recommends genetic testing for you and Doudou, I continued, my voice like a judge delivering a verdict. The cost is about 5, yuan. You will pay for it.
And if its confirmed, Doudou starts treatment immediately. The cost, lets say an average of 8, a month, is , a year. You will be responsible for all of it.
Ninety-six thousand a year? He looked horrified. Where am I going to get that much money?
Thats your problem, I said coldly. You can ask your beloved family, the ones youve been so generously supporting. See if theyll give you a single cent for your daughters treatment.
Or, I added, you can sell the car. You can stop all financial support to your relatives. You can downgrade your lifestyle. I dont care how you do it. But that money will be there, on time, every month.
This is our daughter! Why should I be the only one responsible? he protested.
Because this is a consequence of your familys genes and your years of deception. You pay for the treatment. I will be responsible for everything else: her daily care, her education, her emotional well-being. And I will find a job to ensure that if you fail, she will still have a safety net.
I had never been so clear-headed in my life. The anger had burned away, leaving behind a core of pure, cold determination.
And your mother, I said, delivering the final blow. She can stay for another month. In that month, you will find her a place to live. Or she can go back to the village. Our home is no longer a place for her to enjoy her golden years.
Youre kicking my mother out? He looked at me as if I were a monster.
I am reclaiming my home, I corrected him. A home where my daughters health is the top priority. A home where there are no lies, no secrets, and no one is allowed to harm my child, physically or mentally. She has violated all of these rules.
He was speechless. He just stared at me, the man I once loved, now a stranger I had to fight.
This was the high-point reversal. It wasnt just about the money or the lies anymore. It was about me taking back control. Complete, absolute control.
The days that followed were a quiet, brutal war.
My mother-in-law, after hearing she had to leave, threw the tantrum of a lifetime. She cried, she screamed, she accused me of being a vicious, ungrateful shrew.
I didnt argue. I just packed her things into two large suitcases and placed them by the door.
Zhou Cheng pleaded with me. He begged me to give his mother another chance.
Shes old, he said. She doesnt know any better.
Shes an adult, I replied. And her ignorance has already cost my daughter precious time. There are no more chances.
He finally relented when I showed him a rental listing for a small apartment near our place. Either you pay for this, or I buy her a train ticket home. Your choice.
He chose the apartment. The day his mother moved out, the air in our house instantly felt lighter.
The genetic test results came back.
It was as Dr. Wang had predicted. Doudou had SHOX gene haploinsufficiency. And the faulty gene came from Zhou Cheng.
Armed with the diagnosis, we started the treatment.
The first injection was the hardest.
Doudou was terrified of the needle. She cried and struggled.
Zhou Cheng stood by, wringing his hands, helpless.
I held her in my arms, my heart breaking, but my voice was firm and gentle. Baby, listen to Mommy. This little needle is a magic wand. Its going to help you grow taller and stronger. It will hurt just a little bit, like a mosquito bite. But you are a brave girl, right?
I sang her favorite song, my voice trembling slightly.
Finally, she quieted down, her tear-filled eyes trusting me.
I gave her the shot.
Every night after that, it became our ritual. A painful, but hopeful, ritual.
Zhou Cheng did, to my surprise, come up with the money.
He sold his precious car, which he used to polish every weekend.
He called his siblings and relatives, one by one. I didnt hear the conversations, but I saw the results. The borrowing stopped.
He started working overtime, taking on extra projects. He came home late, looking gray with exhaustion.
He tried to talk to me, to bridge the chasm between us.
Ranran, Ive been saving up. The first quarters treatment fee is in a separate account...
Ranran, I made you some soup...
Ranran, can we... can we go back to how things were?
I would just nod, or give a noncommittal hmm.
Go back?
How could we go back?
Go back to the lies? Go back to me being a blindly trusting fool?
The trust was shattered. It was like a mirror broken into a thousand pieces. You could try to glue it back together, but the cracks would always be there.
A few weeks later, I got a job offer.
It was from a trendy new tech company, as a senior visual designer. The salary was more than what Zhou Cheng was currently making.
The day I signed the contract, I felt a surge of freedom I hadnt felt in years.
I was no longer just Doudous mom or Zhou Chengs wife.
I was Lin Ran again.
I hired a reliable nanny to help with Doudou after school.
My life became a whirlwind of work, meetings, and taking care of Doudou. It was exhausting, but it was fulfilling.
I was building a future for myself and my daughter, a future that depended on no one but me.
One evening, Zhou Cheng came home to find me packing a suitcase.
What are you doing? Are you going on a business trip? he asked, a hint of panic in his voice.
No, I said, folding one of Doudous dresses. We are moving out.
I had rented a two-bedroom apartment near my new company and Doudous school. It was bright and airy, with a small balcony where I could plant flowers.
Moving out? Why? Im doing everything you asked! he cried. I sold the car, Im paying for the treatment, my mom is gone! What more do you want?
I want peace, Zhou Cheng, I said, finally looking at him. I want a life where I dont have to second-guess every word my husband says. I want to look at the man I live with and not see a history of deceit.
I can change! I swear I can change!
Maybe you can, I acknowledged. But I cant un-know what I know. I cant un-feel what Ive felt. The foundation of our marriage is gone.
I wasnt screaming. I wasnt even angry anymore.
I was just... done.
What about Doudou? he asked, his last resort. She needs her father.
She will have her father, I assured him. You can see her every weekend. You can attend her school events. You will always be her dad. But you will no longer be my husband.
He finally broke down, sobbing like a child.
It was a pathetic sight, but my heart was unmoved.
I had shed all my tears for this man. There were none left.
The day we moved, Doudou was excited. She ran around her new room, chattering about where to put her dolls.
I stood on the balcony, looking out at the city lights.
The air was cool and fresh.
For the first time in a long time, I felt like I could breathe again.
A few months later, I met Dr. Wang for a follow-up.
Doudous growth chart showed a tiny, but distinct, upward turn.
Shes responding well to the treatment, Dr. Wang said, a rare smile on her face. Its a long road, but you started at the right time. Youre a good mother.
Tears welled up in my eyes.
This time, they werent tears of anger or sadness.
They were tears of relief.
Walking out of the hospital, Doudou skipped ahead of me. The setting sun cast our shadows long on the pavement. Her shadow was still small, but it was no longer stuck in the same place.
It was growing.
And so was I.
My daughters growth chart wasnt just about height; it was the measure of my own awakening.
